When a production line grinds to a halt, the breakdown can be brainstormed on the spot. At Hotpoint in Chicago, a plant superintendent and two general foremen were turned down after they requested a $200,000 conveyor system. The three didn't cry in their beer; they sat down and brainstormed the problem. The result was an equally efficient system. Price? Only $4000. Andrew R.
